Women of NASA on Lego Ideas by Maia Weinstock

Women of NASA by Maia Weinstock on LEGO Ideas (official project page)

Ladies rock outer space! Women have played critical roles throughout the history of the U.S. space program, a.k.a. NASA or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Yet in many cases, their contributions are unknown or under-appreciated — especially as women have historically struggled to gain acceptance in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This set, first proposed on the LEGO Ideas platform, celebrates five notable NASA pioneers and provides an educational building experience to help young ones and adults alike learn about the history of women in STEM. The five Women of NASA are: Margaret Hamilton, computer scientist; Katherine Johnson, mathematician and space scientist; Sally Ride, astronaut, physicist, and educator; Nancy Grace Roman, astronomer; and Mae Jemison, astronaut, physician, and entrepreneur.

In addition to a desktop frame that displays these five minifigures and their names, the set includes vignettes depicting: a famous photo of the reams of code that landed astronauts on the moon in 1969; instruments used to calculate and verify trajectories for the Mercury and Apollo missions; a microscale Hubble Space Telescope and display; and a mini space shuttle, complete with external tank and solid rocket boosters. Update: WE DID IT!!! In just 15 days — one of the fastest campaigns in LEGO Ideas history — we reached the all-important 10,000-supporter mark. The Women of NASA project now enters the LEGO Review phase; we should find out in January 2017 whether the set will be sold in stores worldwide. Stay tuned!

Update #2: AMAZING NEWS: Women of NASA has been selected by the LEGO Ideas Review Board to become a real LEGO set!!!! Watch the announcement video, and get excited! LEGO designers are already hard at work planning the set's ultimate look and feel. Expected availability in stores is winter 2017-18.
